Cypriot leader Papadopoulos: I tried to speak with Erdogan 3 times


Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopoulus, on a live television program last night, said that he had attempted to carry out talks with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan three different times, but had been unsuccessful in getting an answer from Ankara. Responding to reporters' questions, Papadopoulos said that he was pleased about the start up of EU accession talks with Turkey, and noted "If they had not entered the process, there would have been no opportunity for us to put pressure on them with the EU. Now we have a forum for continual pressure."  
Weston: Greek Cypriots must
change their policy

Former US special coordinator for Cyprus, Tom Weston, said on Thursday that the Greek Cypriot administration should modify its policy in order to make progress on the Cyprus issue. "The Greek Cypriots should understand that they should change their policy, accept the proposal of UN Secretary General, and clearly express what are their priorities regarding the Annan plan," Weston told AA news agency. Weston also said that although he didn't expect an immediate solution to the issue, he was optimistic for a settlement in the future. 
End to PKK unilateral ceasefire

The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) called an end to the unilateral ceasefire against Turkey on Thursday. The one-month long ceasefire had been extended until October 3, the date Turkey started accession talks into the EU. The rebels said in a statement that the ceasefire had come to an end, demanding that as Ankara had now opened talks with Europe, it was now a problem for the EU not only for Turkey.  
Orhan Pamuk: Even radicals in Turkey will embrace the idea of Europe

Turkish author and Nobel Literature prize candidate Orhan Pamuk spoke with the German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung about the recent start-up of EU accession talks with Turkey in Luxembourg. Analyzing the events of the past year, Pamuk said he thought that Turkey would fully embrace the idea of Europe in order not to jeopardize its economic growth. 
EU Commissioner Rehn: Joschka Fischer calls me 'Mustafa'

EU Commissioner for Expansion, Olli Rehn, has spread good will through Ankara during meetings at the Turkish Parliament this week. Drinking a cup of strong Turkish coffee at the Foreign Affairs commission, Rehn was quoted as saying: "Everyone thinks I am very Turkish. Joschka Fischer (the German Foreign Minister) even calls me 'Mustafa' sometimes."
   
Georgia and Turkey sign memorandum on exploration of natural gas
Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli, Saknavtobi's president Vano Nakaidze and Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler, TPAO's Director General Osman Saim Dinc have signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral technical assistance and cooperation. Addressing the signing ceremony, Georgian Premier Noghaideli said that TPAO would assist Saknavtobi in searching for and extracting oil and natural gas and the two organizations would carry out common projects. 
Police detain PKK recruiter
A suspected recruiter (U.Y) for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) has been detained by Izmir's anti-terrorism police squad. The man arrested is believed to have been recruiting new members for the PKK and sending them to northern Iraq for special training. Police launched an operation after receiving a tip-off last week after a note was found a second man's (A.Y) family saying that he was going to join the PKK. After distributing photos of the missing man, A.Y, he was detained at the Diyarbakir bus station in the southeast of Turkey.  
Schroeder expected at the Ramazan iftar table next Wednesday in Istanbul

Results from the meeting of civilizations which occured on October 3 in Luxembourg have already started to roll in. German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder has announced plans to visit Istanbul for the day on October 12, meeting and sharing an "iftar" meal with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The iftar meal marks the end of a day of Ramazan fasting. Schroeder's meal with Erdogan will be the first time a Christian EU leader has shared an iftar with a Turkish prime minister.
