Turkey stars in European headlines this week

The start-up of Turkey's EU accession talks on Monday night caused wide-spread sensation through the European press this week. From headlines welcoming Turkey to the EU to headlines referring to the "new EU borders," a naive newspaper reader could have well been forgiven for thinking that the talks had finished and Turkey had already been accepted, based simply on the headlines. A brief look at some of the more noteable treatments of the topic in a variety of European newspapers:

Czech and Swedish PMs voice hope on EU future for Turkey
Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Jiri Paroubek, and Swedish Prime Minister Goran Persson have both said that they believe the general public in their countries will turn in favor of a future Turkish membership in the EU. At a press conference during an official visit to Sweden by PM Paroubek, the two prime ministers spoke positively about the start up of accession talks between Turkey and the EU. Paroubek stressed that he thought it was very possible that European public opinion to change to be in favor of Turkey.  
US Secretary of State Rice meets with EU envoys in DC, discusses Turkey

At a Washington, DC meeting of EU representative yesterday, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice underlined US support for the Turkish endeavor to enter the EU. Speaking to reporters at a State Department press conference, spokeperson Sean McCormack answered questions about a US interest in Turkey gaining access to the EU, and whether there had been a US role in helping to get talks underway in Luxembourg.  
Turkish women's group fights for name at ECHR
An organization formed by western Thracian Turkish women living in Greece has been forcibly shut down by the Greek federal Court of Appeals. The "Rhodopian Turkish Women's Culture Foundation" was closed down on account of the word "Turkish" found in its title, according to Greek and Turkish sources. Women from the foundation have brought their case to the attention of the European Court of Human Rights, claiming that their rights are being trampled by non other than an EU country.  
Central Bank intervenes in foreign currency market

The Turkish Central Bank has intervened in the foreign currency market on Tuesday. The bank issued a press release that stated, due to the impact of the beginning of EU entry talks, the Central Bank has intervened in the foreign currency market to prevent excessive fluctuations and directly purchased foreign currency. ''The Central Bank will closely monitor fluctuations in foreign currencies and will intervene in the market to avoid excessive fluctuations,'' noted the Central Bank. 
Flash flood in Rize kills one and injures two

Flash floods in the Black Sea province of Rize have resulted in one person dead, two injured and one missing, said officials from the Prime Ministry Emergency Management Desk in a statement yesterday. Up to ten houses were demolished in the floods because of landslides in the area, and many other buildings sustained serious damage. A rescue operation has been underway since Tuesday to rescue the victims who have been stranded by the floods.  
Turkish stock exchange surges with news from Luxembourg
The financial markets in Turkey broke records this week with the start of EU accession talks in Luxembourg. The Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB) hit a peak 35,642 points Tuesday, with a record number of transactions taking place. Not just domestic but international markets too saw Turkish Euro bonds rise to record levels.  
Istanbul bomb-maker dies in blast
A blast in the basement of a building in the Caglayan district of Istanbul has killed one man and wounded seven other people. The man killed was in the process of making a bomb said security officials on Wednesday. "According to the first indications, the explosion happened as a bomb was being made," Istanbul police chief Celalettin Cerrah was quoted as saying by the state-run Anatolian news agency.  
Strong division within Turkish opposition parties regarding EU developments
Political parties in opposition to the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party are divided down the middle in terms of their reaction to Monday's start-up of EU accession talks for Turkey. Decidedly not in favor of the recent developments are National Movement (MHP) Party and Deniz Baykal's Republican People's (CHP) Party. In support of PM Erdogan's moves towards getting Turkey closer to the EU are the Motherland Party (ANAP) and the True Path Party (DYP).
