EU Chief Negotiator Babacan hopeful about start of talks

State Minister and Turkey's Chief Negotiator for the EU talks, Ali Babacan, has said in Washington DC that he recognizes the chance that accession talk documents may change, but and that any late occuring development are being followed closely. In Washington for the fall season meeting of the IMF and the World Bank, Babacan used a question and answer session with reporters to stress that the world's attention would be gathered on Turkey on October 3, and that following this date, a different atmosphere would surround the country.

"Efforts to prevent the accession talks are increasing"

Babacan spoke about how the efforts from certain corners to prevent or derail EU accession talks were increasing as October 3 grows closer, but stressed that the US as always stood firmly behind Turkey in its quest.

Touching on the affect a Turkish EU membership would have on the world, Babacan said "This decision is one which the EU is making about what sort of union it wishes to be in the future. The EU will decide on the Turkey question whether it wants to be an inward looking union, or a project for peace which brings different cultures together."

Babacan said he did not think that any of the current EU leaders would try to prevent the accession talks from occuring after this point.
