Eggs and tomatoes main ingredients for Armenian conference protesters yesterday

A controversial Armenian conference went ahead yesterday at Bilgi University, the buildings it took place in being the target of a volley of tomatoes and eggs, as protestors gathered outside the proceedings to demonstrate their opposition. According to local reports, area bazaars were almost completely sold out of both tomatoes and eggs, as conference protesters had bought up vast quantities of the goods to throw in their demonstrations.

Armed with the tools of what some are calling an "EU certified" protest, rather than sticks and stones, the protesters wound up splashing not just the Bilgi University with eggs and tomatoes, but themselves and the police guarding them as well, not to mention more than a few passers-by. By afternoon time, the protest area carried with it a heavy smell of raw egg.

The "EU-certified" status of the protest did not however mean that the group was one looking to express support for the EU per se: one angry group of protesters, from the Grand Union Party (BBP), tried to take down an EU flag near the front doors to Bilgi University. The police intervened however, and the group was not successful.
