Tupras up for sale today

The Turkish state oil refiner Tupras goes under the hammer on Monday as a sale tender for a 51% stake in the company is due to get underway. The company, which is slated as the central element of the country's privatization program, has suspended the trading of its shares on the Istanbul Stock Exchange until the tender results are announced. Also shares in tender participants: fuel retailer Petrol Ofisi, conglomerate Koc Holding and Aygaz, were suspended from trading.  
Schroeder and Merkel spar over Turkey
on radio program

German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder has accused his opponent in the upcoming elections, Angela Merkel of the Christian Democrats, of making the same mistake regarding Turkey's prospective EU membership as she made with Iraq. Yesterday, in a program carried over the country on the Metropol FM radio station, Schroeder and Merkel sparred over issues, while answering questions on a number of subjects. 
School director shot at
A school director was attacked by two youths wielding guns at a primary school in one of Istanbul's surrounding provinces on Friday. Ali Cebi, director of the Altinyildiz primary school was shot in the foot. The injured were taken to hospital which are located in close by Silivri and Kucukcekmece. The village guard were still looking for the attackers. The attacks sent shock waves through the local community and caused a panic with almost 1400 students attending the primary schools.  
Turkcell thrown out of Iranian telecoms deal
Turkish telecoms giant Turkcell has lost all chances of securing the €300 million deal with Irancell to build Iran's second mobile network, said an Iranian official on Sunday. Turkcell lost priority on the deal after failing to make the deposit necessary to secure the deal, and Irancell Consortium will now give the priority to South Africa's Mobile Telephone Network (MTN).  
Turkey pays more to fill up its cars than any country in the world
Following the latest two increases at the pump, a liter of gas in Turkey is now past 2 dollars, which puts Turkey in first place in the world in terms of the price of filling up a car tank. Prices began creeping up through July and August, with the cost of one liter of gas going from $1.97 at the end of July, to $2.01 at the end of August, and then, with the latest increase on September 10, resting at $2.09 per liter.  
French presidential candidate de Villiers makes Le Pen look like liberal
Phillipe de Villiers, leader of the French nationalist "Movement for France" party, has announced his candidacy for president of the republic in 2007. In doing so, de Villiers attacked both Turkey and Islam, attesting that he was running in order to "stop the Islamicization of France and prevent Turkey from entering the EU."
