Former UK Ministers warns against shutting out Turkey
As the debate on Turkey’s EU accession gets more heated, former UK Minister of Defense Michael Portillo has offered his outlook on the issue – suggesting that shutting out Turkey for good would be a “major blow” strategically, paving the way for fundamentalism. Potillo said secularism in Turkey “doesn’t look very secure”. 
Gul: This time we will walk away for good

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul told Economist magazine on Friday that Turkey would walk away from the EU if a full membership wasn't offered and this time it would be for good. “Should they (the EU) propose anything short of full membership, or any new conditions, we will walk away. And this time it will be for good,” said Gul.  
Turkish Red Cross sends help to Iraq

Following the tragic stampede of Shiite pilgrims in northern Baghdad which killed almost 1000 people, the Turkish Red Cross has sent blood bags and body bags to Iraq reported the Anatolian news agency on Friday. The Turkish red Cross offered help to the Iraqis, which was accepted and then the Iraqi Red Cross.

Three soldiers who survived a massacre of 33 privates in the Turkish armed forces 12 years ago told of their experiences. The year was 1993. They got onto two civilian minibuses leaving from Malatya. They were all in civilian clothing. Their uniforms and army boots were in their bags. None of them were armed, nor were any army personnel accompanying them.  
New York Times reports ex-guerilla Barzani is savoring his victory

The New York Times reported that ex-guerilla leader Mesut Barzani was "savoring his most recent victory", by pretty much securing the rights to a continuation of the autonomy Kurds have become accustomed to over the years, which under the new Iraq constitution will be formalized as part of the new landscape of Iraqi politics. The Times even went as far as to call it "autonomy that approach those of a sovereign state".  
Workers protest privatization of Tüpraş

Workers at the state-owned petroleum refinery Tüpraş went on strike on Friday around Turkey in protest against the projected sell off to foreign investors, reported the Anatolian news agency. The company is slated for privatization as Turkey is undertaking moves to restructure the economy. Protests, which are expected to last for the next few days, were carried out in Aliağa, Kırıkkale, Kocaeli and Batman.  
Nationwide anti-gun campaign launched

Turkey has mounted a nationwide campaign against the use of firing guns at ceremonies and weddings. Backing the campaign is a group of NGOs, the media, police and the state. Turkish citizens have suffered injuries and some have died caught by stray bullets that are fired during celebrations. Two deputies from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) made national headlines when they were seen firing guns at a wedding.  
Kurdish intellectual threatened by PKK

Spokesperson of the leading intellectual Kurdish movement Kürd-Der, İbrahim Güçlü has announced that despite threats from the separatist Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), he will not leave Diyarbakır and go to Sweden, where he has a citizenship. Güçlü said his aim is to illustrate that he is “more courageous than them.” Having received death threats lately, Güçlü is positive they are coming from the outlawed PKK organisation: “The nature and the content of the threats reveal that they come from PKK and their aides.”
