Erdogan met with group of intellectuals
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with a group of intellectuals on Wednesday, who signed a statement calling for the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) to lay down their arms. Speaking at the meeting Erdogan said, "Turkey always has the power to overcome the problems that were inherited from the past, in togetherness." Adding that, "Turkey acts within the principles of democratization and social peace while overcoming all the problems. |

Police detain 10 Al-Qaeda members suspected of planning attacks in Turkey Following a travel warning issued by Israel's Security council counter-terrorism, which strongly advised Israeli tourists to not travel to the south coast of Turkey, on Monday, Turkish police have detained at least 10 people with suspected links to Al-Qaeda. Security sources believe that the group was forming a plot to attack Israeli cruise ships in and around the southern Turkish coast, reported the NTV news channel. |

Washington conference addresses the future of Kirkuk At a conference held in Washington on Tuesday, which was sponsored by the United States Institute of Peace, the future of the northern oil-rich Iraqi city of Kirkuk came under focus. The city's population is made up of Kurds, Arabs and Turkmen, of which the latter it has been said, were marginalized in the elections held earlier this year as many Kurds moved back solely to vote. A solution to satisfy all three ethnic groups needs to be found for lasting peace in the region, the main aim of the conference was to discuss this matter. |

Turkmenistan president grants 13,000 new citizenships Turkmenistan President Saparmurat Niyazov has given citizenship to more than 13,000 displaced persons, most of who are refugees from Tajikistan. Turkmen citizenship was granted to 13,245 persons, and 3,053 residence permits were handed out. Most receivers of the new citizenship had fled from Tajikistan during the war and sought refuge in close by Turkmenistan, according to the country's information agency. |

Three men and a girl arrested in connection with Istanbul bombings Istanbul Police Chief Celalettin Cerrah issued a statement saying that three men and a girl were arrested on Tuesday and brought before the Istanbul criminal court, in connection with the Istanbul July 23 bombings, which took place in a restaurant under the Galata Bridge injuring two people. The four people were questioned by the Istanbul criminal court on duty, were then held on charges of being members of an illegal separatist organization, hurling explosives and attempting to kill people. |

Israeli tourists ignore warnings about Turkey as a holiday destination Despite warnings by the Israeli National Security Council counter for terrorism not to travel to the south coast of Turkey, 80% of Israeli tourists are going ahead with holiday plans, reported the online edition of LexisNexis. Towns which were included on the list of places not to visit were Antalya and Kemer, however, this has not deterred Israelis who want to travel to the popular southern Mediterranean Turkish towns. |
