F.T. runs Cyprus insert: Papadopoulus asserts strong views on Turkish side of island

The English Financial Times newspaper has run an article saying that the Cypriot Greek leader Tasos Papadopolous has asserted that his government supports a "minority" status for Turks on the island, as opposed to a situation where Cypriot Greeks and Turks would be afforded absolute equality. Meanwhile, French PM Dominique de Villepin has said on a radio program that "It is inconceivable that accession talks with Turkey could begin before that country recognizes every single one of the EU entities."  
Turkish Mayor released after five days

A Turkish Mayor, who was kidnapped last week by militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), was released on Monday at around 8.20 pm after being held for five days. Hasim Akyurek, the mayor of Yayladere a small town in the province of Bingol was kidnapped last week from Mt. Sulbus in Yayladere after showing the mountain, which he had plans to turn into a tourist attraction, to his friend. The PKK released Akyurek near to Saritosun, a small hamlet which is part of his district.  
US State Department: We were not aware of news of PKK offices in Kirkuk
At a press conference yesterday, US State Department spokesperson Tom Casey, responding to questions from reporters, asserted that the US was not aware of the recent news of newly opened PKK offices in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, but stated once again that the US sees the the PKK as a terrorist organization.

Cypriot leader Talat in Ankara

Mehmet Ali Talat, the President of the Northern Turkish Republic of Cyprus, went yesterday for the first time to Turkey's Cankaya Presidential Palace to speak to Turkish President Ahmet Sezer and then to the head of the Turkish Armed Forces, General Hilmi Ozkok.From Cankaya, Talat sent a message to Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan that he had received an invitation from British PM Tony Blair to meet with him in London in the fall.  
Accession talks prerequisites

Signals about prerequisites to the scheduled October 3 EU accession talks have begun to flow in to Ankara.While French PM Dominique de Villepin has repeated that Turkey's official recognition of Greek controlled Cyprus is a necessary step before the October 3 talks, the EU Commission has replied that that the UN is in fact the place where the Cyprus problem should be ironed out.  
American journalist found dead in Iraq
An American freelance journalist has been found dead in Iraq. Steven Vincent's body was found in the southern city of Basra, the US Embassy said on Wednesday. Police reported that Vincent's body had been shot multiple times after he and his translator had been abducted hours earlier. "I can confirm to you that officials in Basra have recovered the body of journalist Steven Vincent," said embassy spokesman Pete Mitchell.  
Floods in eastern Black Sea region kill 5

Rains which began two nights ago in the eastern Black Sea region of Trabzon are at the root of flooding responsible for the death of residents, and for much destruction of property. Floods in Trabzon were resonsible for the deaths of two children and two adults, while in Ordu, two workers were lost.  
Six people injured in two explosions in Antalya

Six people were injured as two explosions ripped through garbage cans in the southern-Mediterranean resort town of Antalya on Tuesday, officials said. The cause of the explosion was not yet known, however, Turkey's tourism minister blamed the explosions on gas leaks. Police have not confirmed the cause of the blast as of yet. The explosions happened within minutes of each other, three city cleaners were hurt as they emptied the first garbage can. While the second explosion injured three people, including a French tourist.
