TRNC PM Soyer: Turkey's signing the protocol was expected

Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said, ''Turkey's signing Customs Union Additional Protocol was an expected development." Adding that, "Through the declaration Turkey stressed that it protects its rights and responsibilities gained by 1960 Guarantee and Alliance agreements and that Turkish Cypriots will never abandon their equal partnership rights that established the 1960 Cyprus Republic.''

Soyer told the press that the recognition of Cyprus was the biggest issue when it came to signing the protocol: ''The most debated issue was whether or not Turkey would recognize 'Cyprus republic'. Turkey, in its declaration, clearly and obviously declared that it does not recognize 'Cyprus republic'.''

''Turkey re-confirmed that it is loyal to UN solution process which Turkish Cypriots and Turkey support. Thus, Turkey declared to the world that it supports political line for solution of Cyprus problem which was displayed by Turkish Cypriots in referendum,'' he added.

Soyer said, ''Turkish Cypriot people should be included in enlargement process with their social existence and identity. Also isolation of TRNC should be lifted.''
