Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), who have been in command of Kabul International Airport for the last six months, plan to hand over control to Portugal on Monday. TSK took over command from Iceland on January 31, 2005. The airport is on a six month rotation between security forces stationed in the country. During the six months that Turkish forces were in command of the airport, the surrounding area was cleared of up to 50% of land mines, which are believed to be scattered in lands close by. Also 90% of wreckage was cleared from the airport.

The TSK, which is the leading force in Afghanistan currently, were in command of military personnel from 26 countries at Kabul International Airport during that time.
