Released Turkish suspects talk about detention

Turkish suspects, who were held under detention in London as police continue their manhunt for those responsible for the London bombings, have exclusively spoke to Hürriyet about their experiences under detention. Islam Tat, Hidayet Derya and Ibrahim Yalcin were the first three Turkish men to be detained, who were later joined by Baris Basegmez, 28.  
Gul reveals details of the EU protocol

Minister of Internal Affairs Abdullah Gul has claimed there is no reason why Turkey should not start EU membership negotiations right away, having passed the necessary legislation and having signed the additional protocol. Controversy over the recognition of Cyprus by signing the agreement has been an issue debated in the Turkish media.  
Turkey signs custom protocol
After months of debate, Turkey took one of its final steps towards guaranteeing that EU accession talks would go ahead as scheduled for October 3, by signing a customs union protocol with 10 member states. However, Ankara said that this did not mean full recognition of Cyprus. Britain, who presently hold the rotating EU presidency, is pushing for Turkey's membership into the bloc. 
Turkey is not an option for Iran's gas exports
Turkish officials have said that Turkey as the only viable option for Iran to export its oil through Ukraine to Western markets is unrealistic. "This is not very realistic. First of all, there is no such line and neither Russia nor Turkey would allow their territorial waters to be used for such a line," an official said. 
Erdogan: We have a right to protect ourselves

Speaking in an interview with the Times of London yesterday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Ankara could conduct a cross-border operation against the terrorist group PKK and furthermore urged countries aiding the PKK to end this support. “If a country, if a people, if a nation are under threat, that country can do what is necessary under international law," Erdogan told the Times.  
Prominent Euro MP says Turkey must recognize Cyprus

Leader of the European Parliament's largest political group, German Christian Democrat Hans-Gert Poettering said that Turkey must recognize Cyprus before it starts talks with the European Union on whether it will become a member of the 25-nation bloc. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Poettering said, "Negotiating means accepting each other as negotiating partners." Poettering heads the conservative European People's Party in the EU assembly. 
Turkish Mayor kidnapped by Kurdish Rebels
The Mayor of Yayladere in Bingol, Hasim Akyurek, has been kidnapped by members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), security officials reported on Thursday. The kidnapping took place while the mayor was on his way to inspect preparations for a local festival. Police have launched a search for Akyurek, a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party.  
Yapi Kredi Publications threatens illegal translators of Harry Potter

Turkish publishers Yapi Kredi Publications, who have the rights to publish Harry Potter in Turkey have threatened legal action after reports that unofficial Turkish translations of the latest book in the series, Harry Potter and The Half-Blood prince, have been posted on the internet. The Turkish publishing house placed advertisements in the dailies on Thursday, regarding these translations, calling them illegal and that they will take "whatever necessary measures" to stop this from happening.  
Fifteen PKK militants killed in border operation
Fifteen militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) have been killed by Turkish armed forces in clashes that broke out in a remote southeast part of Turkey – a stretch of land that borders with northern Iraq. Original numbers of the dead had been reported as eight killed, however, officials said on Wednesday that the number now stood at 15. During the operation a number of arms and documents were seized, official also noted.
