Earthquake skakes central Turkey
An earthquake shook central Turkey at 00.45 am on Sunday measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale, only minor damages were caused officials said. The centre of the quake was in Bala, near to the capital of Ankara, Istanbul's Kandilli Observatory said. The village most affected by the tremor was Saripinar village, where 170 mud-and-brick houses mostly suffered cracks, the Anatolian news agency reported. No one was hurt in the quake. |

Gul: Turkey has kept its promise to the EU
Speaking on NTV channel Saturday, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gulsaid that there was no reason why EU accession talks wouldn't go ahead as planned with the signing of the additional customs protocol now being completed. "Turkey kept its promise by signing Customs Union additional protocol. Thus, there is no obstacle before starting entry talks with the EU on October 3rd." |

King Fahd of Saudi Arabia dies
Saudi Arabia's King Fahd died in hospital early on Monday morning, after being admitted to King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh in late May, 2005 for respiratory problems cause by pneumonia. State television interrupted programs to recite verses from the Holy Koran. A statement made on state television read: "Prayers for King Fahd bin Abdel Aziz will be held following afternoon prayers on Tuesday at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah mosque." |

Package containing C-4 explosives found in Istanbul A package containing C-4 explosives has been found at the entrance to a military base in Istanbul on Monday morning. The package that was found by military personnel is said to have contained two kilograms of explosives and was left outside the military base of 474th Transport Battalion in Istanbul's Bayrampasa district. The bomb was destroyed by a controlled detonation carried out by bomb experts close to the Metris prison in Istanbul. |

TSK to hand over control of Kabul Airport Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), who have been in command of Kabul International Airport for the last six months, plan to hand over control to Portugal on Monday. TSK took over command from Iceland on January 31, 2005. The airport is on a six month rotation between security forces stationed in the country. During the six months that Turkish forces were in command of the airport, the surrounding area was cleared of up to 50% of land mines, which are believed to be scattered in lands close by. Also 90% of wreckage was cleared from the airport. |

TRNC PM Soyer: Turkey's signing the protocol was expected
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said, ''Turkey's signing Customs Union Additional Protocol was an expected development." Adding that, "Through the declaration Turkey stressed that it protects its rights and responsibilities gained by 1960 Guarantee and Alliance agreements and that Turkish Cypriots will never abandon their equal partnership rights that established the 1960 Cyprus Republic.'' |
