Investigation opened into high school's reported anti-Ataturk stance
A high school in the Turkish city of Zonguldak accused of passing around comic books portraying Ataturk as an enemy of religion is now said to have erased the silhouette image of Ataturk from its students' report cards. Zonguldak's Hasan Ali Yucel high school first came into the public eye with reports two months ago that it had overseen the passing out of comic books which showed Ataturk as an enemy of Islam. |

'Caravan for Palestine' arrives in Istanbul
"Caravan for Palestine" arrived in Istanbul on Monday. A group of European human rights organizations are the think-tank behind the "Caravan for Palestine" which is being used as an instrument to draw attention to the human rights violations in Palestine. The caravan [convoy] which will join various activities in Istanbul set off from Strasbourg, passing through France before arriving in Istanbul. Next, the caravan will travel to Jerusalem passing through Syria and Jordan along the way. |

Massive hunt for kidnapped soldier in Tunceli
Turkish armed forces have descended into the region in and around Tunceli in a massive hunt for soldier Coskun Kirandi, captured during a PKK road block on the Tunceli-Pulumur highway two days ago.The capture of Private Kirandi occured Sunday, when a 15 person group of PKK members set up an armed roadblock on the Tunceli highway. |

Closed talks between Turkey and Armenia confrimed Amid rumors of a "secret meeting", The Turkish Foreign office confirmed on Monday that talks between Armenian and Turkish diplomats took place in a European city recently. During the meeting Turkey presented its proposals on the issue of normalizing relations between the two countries. The meeting took place following the exchange of letters between the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian President Robert Kocharyan. The letters addressed the subject of the so-called Armenian genocide. |

PKK attacks army brigade near Kars; residents frightened A PKK attack on a Turkish army brigade took place this weekend in the Kars province of Digor. The attack, carried out with bazooka guns, occured from a hill outside of Digor thought to be occupied by PKK forces. The brigade of army privates was in the center of Digor when the attack occured. |

European Parliament member: PKK no different from Al Qaeda
European Parliament member and Turkey observer Camiel Eurlings has condemned the PKK bomb attack in the Turkish resort town of Cesme, noting that "the PKK is no different than whatever Al Qaeda is." The attack in Cesme, which took place last week, didn't kill anyone, but injured 22 people. |

Two suspects in Istanbul 2003 bombings held in Abu Ghraib Following the bomb attacks in Istanbul in November 2003, it was revealed that Al Qaeda's Turkey operatives in charge of the attacks, Habib Aktas, Azat Ekinci, Gurcan Bac, Abdulkadir Karakus, and Burhan Kus had fled to Iraq for safe haven from Turkish authorities. Recently however, authorities in Ankara were informed that Karakus had been captured by US forces in Iraq, and was being held in the infamous Abu Graib prison. |

40 people poisoned by gas leak in Mersin Forty people were suffering from ammonia poisoning following a gas leak in the city of Mersin on Tuesday. Thirty-eight people were not in a serious danger, however, two of them were in a critical condition, police said on Tuesday. Firefighters and police officers were among the poisoned after the gas leaked from a burst pipe in a fertilizer factory in the southern part of the city. An explosion occurred in AK Fertilizer factory's pipes on Monday night. Although the flow of ammonia was cut gas continued to leak from the pipes. |

Greek PM plans to visit Ankara
The Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is planning to visit Ankara next month, government sources said on Monday. The proposed date for the visit is scheduled for August 22-23. The visit will be a historic one between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Greek counterpart – Karamanlis will be the first Greek PM to visit Ankara in over 45 years. Erdogan invited the Greek PM in a drive to strengthen bilateral relations between the neighboring countries. |
