Ceremonies mark 10 year anniversary of massacre of Bosnian Muslims

Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul represented Turkey yesterday in ceremonies marking the 10 year anniversary of the Serbian massacre of 8 thousand Bosnian Muslim in and around Srebreniza. Thousands of Bosnians flowed into the city yesterday to remember the victims of the massacre, which is known to have been carried out under orders from Serbian leaders Ratko Mladic and Radovan Karadzic. Both men are missing, and are thought to be in hiding under the protection of radical nationalistic Bosnian Serbs. The fact that NATO forces have still not been able to find a trace of the two men has raised question marks in the minds of many in the region.

The ceremonies yesterday, to which an estimated 50,000 people came, were attended by foreign dignitaries from England, France, and the Netherlands, as well as former US representative to the UN, Richard Holbrooke. Most noteable however was the attendance of Serbian State Minister Boris Tadic; it was the first time a Serbian politician of his status had participated in a ceremony commemorating the deaths of Muslim Bosnians. Mass graves in the city are marked now by statues in memory of the massacre victims, many of whom are as yet unidentified.
