'Suicidal' Turkish sheep make world news The case of sheep jumping off a cliff to their death in Geveş, Van, has made news around the world. The bizarre incident took place while shepherds were eating breakfast and one sheep strayed from the flock and jumped from the cliff top. A total of 1,500 sheep followed the first sheep, however, 450 sheep died from the fall. Newspapers from prestigious journals to tabloid rags are covering the "mass suicide" in their pages. The news story has featured in newspapers all over the world, from China to Spain and from England to US. |

Former WB president meets TOBB chairman Former World Bank President and special envoy for the Quartet for the Middle East Peace Process James Wolfensohn met with Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu at Ankara’s Esenboga Airport on Friday. The Quartet for the Mideast Peace Process is made up of the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations. Wolfensohn was briefed about the work of the Ankara Platform, a group established by Turkish, Palestinian and Israeli businessmen. |

OECD: Turkey's economy is slowing down According to composite leading indicators of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Turkey’s economy is slowing down. The indicators cover various areas such as electricity production, new domestic orders, employment, export opportunities and discounted interest rates of Treasury tenders. An OECD report noted that the composite leading indicators index of the Turkish economy fell by 0.2% and 0.1% in April and May, respectively, showing a slowdown in the economy’s expansion. |

Website claims 173 violations made in Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project An article published on the website www.guerrillanews.com claims that; "173 violations of World Bank environmental and social standards in the Turkish section of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline project were made during the design stage alone". It is also stated that "the Kurdish Human Rights Project have filed cases in the European Court of Human Rights on behalf of 38 affected villagers along the route, alleging multiple violations of the European Convention on Human Rights including: the illegal use of land without payment of compensation or expropriation, underpayment for land, intimidation, lack of public consultation, involuntary resettlement and damage to land and property." |

Kurdish bomb attack in Cesme wounds 22 people The bombing of a popular Turkish western-resort town on Sunday has left 22 people wounded. The explosion occurred in the afternoon on Sunday and was caused by either a fragmentation bomb or a pipe bomb in a garbage can outside the main shopping centre. Kurdish rebels from the the Kurdistan Liberation Hawks (TAK) have claimed responsibility for the bombing through the Europe-based Mezopotamya News Agency. "A person describing himself as an official from TAK telephoned Mezopotamya and said that they were responsible for the attack in Cesme today," the agency said. |
