Three soldiers dead and eight wounded in landmine explosion in southeast Turkey

Three Turkish soldiers and at least eight were wounded on Saturday when their vehicle hit a landmine which is believed to have been planted by Kurdish rebels in the southeast of Turkey. The attack happened in the remote province of Hakkari, which borders from Turkey with Iraq and Iran. Following the attacks the military launched a sweeping operation along the border of Iraq, said a military official on Saturday.

"A large-scale operation with between 3,000 and 4,000 troops backed by air support is continuing," he said. "PKK militants are bringing C-4 plastic explosives and other materials across the Iraqi border," the official said. "They are engaging in the low-risk tactic of detonating bombs and mines by remote control in attacks on military vehicles in the region."

This is the latest in a long line of attacks which have been taking place since the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) called off the unilateral ceasefire last year. In the past week, the PKK have claimed responsibility for two separate attacks on trains in the southeast of Turkey.

A number of security forces and civilians have died since the renewed violence started up just over a month ago. This has been the most active period since the arrest of PKK rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan in 1999.
