Tufan Turenc: The British could not even celebrate their Olympic victory

I have to reveal my feelings openly: I am very pleased that that the Olympics were not given to Paris. When the decision of the Olympic Committee was announced from Singapore, my reaction was "Oh, good for them!" My anger towards the French might be judged peculiar, since I studied in a French high school. But if you take a look at the French position over the last few years, it is completely natural I think. Is there a single Turk who is not angry with France these days? I don't think so. Starting with the French politicians, the anti-Turkey stance of the French people has completely erased any sympathy for the French nation among our people.

Giscard d'Estaing, under the influence of his Greek mistress, planted the seeds of hostility towards Turkey across all of Europe... And then of course there was Madam Mitterrand's unlimited anger towards Turkey (for the sake of her Kurdish cause)...Then of course there was Chirac's far from friendly, on again off again behavior and words towards us...And the anti-Turkey rhetoric filled speeches of Sarkozy, who will one day soon be President of the French Republic...And last but not least, the stance of the French people against the Turks, from whom they have always seen friendship and support.

Isn't all this enough to have me saying "Oh, good for them!" when I heard the decision of the Olympic Committee?

Actually, the analyses in yesterday's French newspapers, the Liberation and Le Figaro, summed up my feelings perfectly. Le Figaro said: "The decision points to France's negative image in the international arena." And the Liberation said: "Everyone has left us alone." French politicians should carefully research the reasons for the Olympic Committess members' decision, and then reveal them to the French people. If they can figure out why this country, which for no reason, has nourished so much hatred for a friendly country like Turkey, is disliked by so much of the world, they will perhaps be saved from being alone. The French should not forget that anti-Turkism will not gain them anything.

And when it comes to the question of terror in London...

They were not even able to enjoy one day of celebration at having won the 2012 Olympics. The terrorists thought even that was too much for the British. Turkey has for years said that terror is a crime against humanity, and that all of the countries in the world need to work together to overcome it. I think that after these London attacks, European countries will finally realize how awful terrorist acts are, and will be embarrassed by their stance towards Turkey on the PKK terror matter. Turkey has experienced so much terror, and knows the pain very well. If humanity works together, we can wipe terror from the face of the earth. I wish the British people all the best in these times.
