Joschka Fischer: Not in our best interests to stop EU expansion

The German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, has said that stopping the expansion process of the EU would not be in the best interests of its security concerns. Fischer, speaking at a meeting in Berlin, came out strongly against stopping or slowing down the EU expansion process in response to the ongoing crisis within the EU. 
Deniz Baykal: The government is being Islamicized

General leader of the Republican People's (CHP) Party, Deniz Baykal, yesterday accused the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party of wanting to carry religion over into Turkish education, justice, politics, and social life. Warned Baykal at a meeting of a parliamentary group in Ankara yesterday, "They are looking for ways to create a Turkish life and appearance more marked by the stamp of Islam."  
State prosecutor called for life imprisonment for Istanbul bombers
A Turkish prosecutor pressed for life sentences on Monday for four defendants charged in connection with the al-Qaeda-linked bombings that killed dozens of people in Istanbul, 2003. The bombings which rocked the city of Istanbul in 2003, hit two synagogues, the local headquarters of the UK based bank HSBC Bank and the British consulate, were claimed to be the work of a Turkish cell of Osama bin Ladens' al-Qaeda terrorist network. Istanbul court will hear charges against 71 suspected Islamist militants in connection with these attacks.  
Drunken Turkish passenger forces emergency landing on Hong Kong bound flight
An Airbus A330 carrying 255 passengers on a flight from Tokyo to Hong Kong was forced to land on Monday due to the actions of a drunken and aggressive Turkish passenger. 40 year old Ahmet Pesenoglu was seen by other passengers drinking several beers in the airport prior to his flight, though nothing adverse occured until, when on the flight, he began listening to music at an extremely loud volume on his headphones. Refusing to turn down his music, despite the complaints of other passengers, Pesenoglu became angry when a hostess came to warn him.  
Tope US law students study in Istanbul

Yeditepe University in Istanbul is hosting 25 students from a top US law school for a summer course on the Turkish legal system. The students come from American University Washington College of Law and will study with members of the law faculty. Dean of Washington College of Law, Professor David Jaffe, said that Turkey is an important country not only because of its relations with the European Union but also with the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East.  
EU Commission to reveal framework for October 3 talks today; last minute Cyprus request added to document
The "Accession Talks Framework Document," which will be revealed today by the EU Commission, has had a request for normalization of relations between Turkey and the "Cypriot Republic" added on to it. The document, which is to be approved this morning by EU Commission members, and made public later in the afternoon, is divided into three sections composed of 8 pages.  
Kurdish Turk commits suicide while in UK custody
Britain's asylum system is under heavy criticism again following the suicide of a Kurdish Turk who was being held in custody for months with no bail. Ramazan Camlica, 19, took his own life after being refused bail three times. Camlica was found hanging in his cell at Campsfield House in Oxfordshire, early on Monday. Apparently the detainee had been at the centre so long, approximately 5 - 7 months, that he was awarded his own room, which gave him opportunity to hang himself from the hinge of the door. this period of detention is not usual said Kurdish community leaders living in the UK as only those facing imminent deportation are supposed to be detained.  
New Iranian regime promises relaxed stance on music, fashion

The election of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad to the Presidency of Iran does not necessarily mean a change towards the conservative as far as women's outfits or lifestyle in Iran are concerned, according to Ahmedinejad's spokeseman, Mehdi Kolhar. In an interview with Iranian satellite channel MITV, broadcasting from Germany, Kolhar said "Ahmedinejad will do his best to make sure people's private lives stay that way. We have asked police not to interfere with what young men and women are wearing. The President wants everyone to be happy. We want to cease censureship and other pressures. Everyone may own a satellite receiver if they wish." 
EU to present roadmap for Turkish accession

The European Union is set to present a roadmap for Turkey on Wednesday six-months ahead of the date set for accession into the EU bloc to begin. The roadmap will carry strict guidelines, which is said to include up to 35 specific chapters that will focus on subjects such as agriculture, the economy and justice. The European Commission's draft negotiating mandate must be approved by all 25 member states before it can be delivered to Turkey. Each chapter of the mandate must have a unanimous agreement between all member states before opening talks on each chapter, also a vote will take place to assess the implementation of each chapter before closing.
