European press gives generous coverage to framework document for Turkey
The European press gave generous coverage to the EU Commission's acceptance yesterday of the Framework for Accession Talks Document prepared as a roadmap for Turkey. Many newspapers noted that despite the crisis in the EU, the organization was not going to give up on its promises to Turkey, predicting though that the requirements would now be stiffer. Other newspapers attested that attempts to stop Turkey's accession process had been defeated. The Financial Times of London, for its part, carried a cartoon depicting Prime Minister Erdogan as a beleaguered football player trying to kick a ball into a goal guarded by more than 20 goalies.

According to ISNA, Iranian MP Sukrullah Attarzade maintains that "Rice wants to attack Iran because her heart was broken by a young man from Kazvin. Fist-fight mars parliamentary session; CHP and AKP tense on subject of religion
A session of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) yesterday on the subject of the acceptance of the new TUBITAK law was the scene for a fistfight between ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party and opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party members. When AKP MP Resul Rosun accused CHP MPs of being "against Islam," the tension in the TBMM rose between the two majority parties.

Handcuffs at Incirlik: Tension between US and Turkish forces at the base a reality
The secrecy surrounding 10 minutes of high tension between US and Turkish soldiers on the Incirlik Base in Adana has been lifted by Hurriyet sources. A US authority speaking to Hurriyet sources has said that an emergency landing made by a US C-17 airplane caused enough disagreement between US and Turkish soldiers present that a US soldier was even handcuffed at the base by a Turkish counterpart. Though the Turkish General Staff confirms that a C-17 did in fact land without permission at the base, they deny the handcuff incident.

Europe's growing animosity for Turkey's EU bid
The question over Turkey's membership into the European Union has this week dominated Euro politics, the media, and continues to do so with the meeting held in Brussels, yesterday, to lay out the framework in which the sometimes viewed huge, poor and mainly Muslim country can join the ranks of the EU bloc. There are a number of topics that Turkey must find some closure on before it can proceed to accession talks that have already been scheduled to start on October 3. The Cyprus issue must be tackled ahead of the talks. The concern for over expansion of the EU is also a primary worry. Euro MPs gathered yesterday in Brussels to discuss these issues.
