The election of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad to the Presidency of Iran does not necessarily mean a change towards the conservative as far as women's outfits or lifestyle in Iran are concerned, according to Ahmedinejad's spokeseman, Mehdi Kolhar. In an interview with Iranian satellite channel MITV, broadcasting from Germany, Kolhar said "Ahmedinejad will do his best to make sure people's private lives stay that way. We have asked police not to interfere with what young men and women are wearing. The President wants everyone to be happy. We want to cease censureship and other pressures. Everyone may own a satellite receiver if they wish."
When asked about the new president's stance on music, Kolhar said this: "We need to open up different areas for people to work in. We need to create an environment in which our pop, even our rock, music can better itself." Kolhar did however speak out during the interview against the popular Iranian "picnic" or "music course" meetings which many young men and women in Iran use an an excuse to meet outside their homes. "When boys and girls go out together, the result is bad" warned Kolhar. |
