Tope US law students study in Istanbul

Yeditepe University in Istanbul is hosting 25 students from a top US law school for a summer course on the Turkish legal system. The students come from American University Washington College of Law and will study with members of the law faculty. Dean of Washington College of Law, Professor David Jaffe, said that Turkey is an important country not only because of its relations with the European Union but also with the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East.

''There are commercial ties, mutual initiatives and investments between Turkey and the U.S.. Differences in legal interpretations do cause problems for those doing business with Turkey and the U.S.. For this reason, American law students want to be informed on Turkish laws,'' said Jaffe.

Jaffe said that as this was the first year of the program there would be a greater participation in years to follow.

Yeditepe University summer program will give training in Turkish civil law, EU harmonization laws, contracts & torts, Turkish commercial competition laws and the legal status of the Turkish straits.
