Joschka Fischer: Not in our best interests to stop EU expansion

The German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, has said that stopping the expansion process of the EU would not be in the best interests of its security concerns. Fischer, speaking at a meeting in Berlin, came out strongly against stopping or slowing down the EU expansion process in response to the ongoing crisis within the EU.

Fischer also underlined that creating a lasting peace in the Balkans depended on the European view.

Fear of foreigners

Fischer also warned that "the path leading to social populism or fear of foreigners should not be opened in Germany" as a result of the crisis in the EU. The FM stressed that such a development could put German foreign policy, which is heavily aimed towards intergration into Europe, up for questioning.

Meanwhile, a public opinion poll conducted by the German magazine Stern showed that 58% of Germans believe that the EU crisis will pass. A lesser 36% believe that the EU will never recover fully from the crisis.
