Limitless tea for MPs unfair

A letter sent to all Turkish MPs by the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament (TBMM), Bulent Arinc, has elicited an interesting response from opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party member Canan Aritman. The letter from Arinc announces that from now on, Turkish MPs will have 20 YTL deducted from their monthly salaries to pay for tea consumed on the job. Aritman's response to Arinc's announcement is as follows:
40,000 ethnic Bulgarians cast votes in support of Turkish led HOH Party in Saturday elections
In Saturday's Bulgarian parliamentary elections, the ethnically Turkish-backed Movement for Rights and Freedoms (HOH) Party, led by Ahmet Dogan, managed to increase its representation in the 240 seat Sofia Parliament to 33 seats. Gathering a total of 444,509 votes, HOH's success was seen as rooted in vigorous participation from neighboring Turkey, where many citizens maintain dual Bulgarian-Turkish citizenship and thus voting rights, as well as an overall low turnout in the elections. Voter participation in this year's elections dropped to a low %56 of eligable voters.

She, along with other MPs and leaders of the CHP Women's Wing, marched yesterday from CHP headquarters in Ankara to the Turkish Parliament to present the signatures to the government.
Washington Post: Are Turkey's hopes of joining the EU dead?
An article published on Tuesday in the Washington Post reports on "Turkey's evolving economy". The article touches on the reasons why the Netherlands and France rejected the European Constitution, giving cause to Turkey's relatively cheap labor which it states is a worry for workers in Europe as Turkey can provide workers at "one-sixth of the wages in Germany and France". A discussion on how Turkey has become "a threat" to the economies of Europe, is discussed in the article which describes Turkey in Europe's eyes as "a nation (that could) steal manufacturing work while delivering an influx of indigent job-seekers".
Sabanci warns: TUSAID representation important for Turkey at October 3 talks

Omer Sabanci, president of the the powerful Turkish Industrialists and Entrepreneurs' Association (TUSAID), has commented on the question of which business organizations, if any, would be representing Turkey during the accession talks with the EU, scheduled to start on October 3. Sabanci, who has stressed that if TUSAID is to be a part of the process, it must represent itself autonomously and not be represented by the government, said this: "If the government bases its representation on a hierarchical categorization system, we cannot accept this."
White House press conference style sweeps Ankara
The Prime Ministerial Offices in Ankara have begun implementing a press conference style reminiscent of those carried out at the US White House. Yesterday, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman Akif Beki briefed reporters on PM Erdogan's upcoming travel plans.
Opposition CHP warns: Children are in danger at unauthorized Koran courses
While the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party is preparing to pass through Parliament once again this week the bill which would reduce the sentence for anyone caught running or teaching in an unauthorized Koran course, the opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party is sharpening its tone in response. CHP members on the Parliament's Justice Commission have made these chilling accusations about the changes to the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), changes which Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer vetoed only a few weeks back:

Armenian President Kocharian: Turkey's requests a no-go
Armenian President Robert Kocharian, in a speech this week to Armenian students in Moscow, has once more put his stance towards Turkey out in the open. According to the Armenian news agency ARKA, Kocharian said "We see as unacceptable Turkey's request that we give up talks about the Karabag region and the genocide. We will sit down to speak with Turkey only if there are no such requests made." Kocharian also asserted in his speech to students that the Armenian controlled Nagorno Karabag region was much more democratic than Azerbayjian.
