On the one hand, the leader of the world, the US....and on the other, defender of an even deeper Sheriat system, Iran.
And in the middle, Turkey. The US sees Iran as being the biggest source of Islamic terror threatening its sovereignty. It believes that one day, the nuclear weapons being developed by both Iran and North Korea will either pass into the hands of, or be given to, terrorist groups.
According to newspapers, 48 year old Mahmud Ahmedinejad doesn't feel the need to hide Iran's relationship with nuclear power: "Nuclear energy is the product of Iranian peoples' scientific development, and no one can block a country's scientific development. The Iranian people will soon be delivered from those who would deny them this right." (The NYT, June 26, 2005) Ahmedinejad, who was an authority in the "Besich" group which followed closely the principles put forth in the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, makes it clear that Iran should not bend to please international pressure on the matter of Iran's nuclear technology development. Neither is he very happy with the meetings Iran has had with the EU regarding nuclear technology. *** The US is now face to face with an Iran from which the last trace of moderation has been erased! *** Turkey, which following the Iranian elections is now stuck between a rock and a hard place, can put the US reaction to one side, and focus on the fact that it is now face to face with a neighbor whose aim is to have nuclear weapons, who has deep rooted and strong governmental traditions, whose spy and disinformation techniques are suberb, and whose world view is completely opposed to ours. Turkey cannot take as a guarantee the promises of this regime that it won't develop nuclear weapons. The very fact that nuclear power exists there is a threat in itself! May Allah be on the side of Turkey during the period of Ahmedinejad! (Hürriyetim) |
