Erdogan: Turkey is not renegotiating anything

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey would not be renegotiating anything over its bid to join the European Union (EU). The Pm added that he expects "honest politics" as the country goes into a new phase as of October 3, when Turkey's accession talks are set to start. The Eu has already imposed tough conditions on Turkey: A solution to the Cyprus issue, show progress on Kurdish rights, limit the military might in politics, improve the economy and treat ethnic groups and religious minorities equally.

As many within the EU are still sceptic as Turkey bids for membership, a move that if accepted would stretch Europe's borders as far Iran and Syria. EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said this week that the bloc should have an open debate on Turkey.

The PM told reporters that Turkey would not be renegotiating anything. Adding that, "If you impose new things on countries from one day to the next, especially at a time when negotiations are about to start, that would not be right. We are used to honest politics, that's what we expect and want."
