US delegation visits Ankara A group of US congressional delegates lead by Republican Congressman Ed Whitfield arrived in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and met with TRNC Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas, yesterday. Soyer was pleased that the US delegation had decided to visit and show support for the Turkish Cypriot people. Thanking the delegation Soyer said, “This visit is a kiss of life for us in our struggle for uniting Cyprus and solving the Cyprus issue. We are as legal as the Greek Cypriots. The illegal thing is the Papadopoulos administration, which continues the separation.” |

Turkey to play an active role in PSI Turkey has decided to play an active role in the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI) against weapons of mass destruction, a project Washington places importance on to block Iran’s nuclear program. Ankara yesterday officially stated that it had accepted US Deputy Secretary of Defense Douglas Feith’s offer to Turkey to undertake the role of regional leadership in the PSI to which 11 countries are party. |

Global conference in Istanbul Istanbul will play host to the Conference on Democracy and Global Security on June 9-11. The meeting is being organized by the Directorate General of Turkish National Police, under the auspices of Turkish Prime Minister Mr. Recep Tayyip ErdoganN. The conference aims to bring together specialists from academia, law enforcement, decision- making positions, media and experts to discuss, from a global perspective, balancing safety, security measures, anti-terrorism efforts, peacemaking initiatives, human rights and social justice issues. |

New Belgian coach at Galatasaray
Belgian coach Erik Gerets has signed a two-year contract at Galatasaray on Tuesday. Gerets quit his German post just days after resigning at VFL Wolfsburg over a long-standing row with sports director Thomas Strunz.The 51-year-old coach will take over from Gheorghe Hagi, who resigned from the Turkish premier club after they failed to qualify for the Champions League. Hagi said that he had felt alone at the club for some time now and that he had made the decision to resign 10 days ago. |

The war of words between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and opposition party leader Deniz Baykal continues. Baykal and other Republican People's (CHP) Party members were swift to condemn changes made last week to the new Turkish Penal Code (TCK) which will lessen the punishment for those involved in running and teaching in unauthorized Koran courses. |

French President Jacques Chirac has named the so-called "faithful man" Dominique de Villepin to fill the Prime Ministerial position left empty by Jean-Peirre Raffarin when he resigned. In the empty place at the Interior Ministry left by de Villepin, Chirac has chosen the people's favorite, and leader of the Union for Popular Movement, Nicholas Sarkozy. |

Photographic display featuring dead PKK fighters closed down in Diyarbakir
A photographic display featuring the pictures of 45 PKK members killed in clashes with the Turkish armed forces was forcibly shut down and removed from the 5th Culture and Arts Festival sponsored by the Diyarbakir Municipality. The five people responsible for setting up the display were also taken under police custody. |

Covered Iraqi female MPs visit Turkish Parliament, ask after Turkish female MPs Five members of Iraq's National Parliament, including three fully covered women, visited the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) yesterday. Meetings are taking place between the Turkish government and the new Iraqi government on the subject of the preparation of the new Iraqi Constitution. The guest delegation met with Justice Commission Head Koksal Toptan, as well as with Constitution Commission Head Burhan Kuzu. |
