Venus Williams' match stretches two continents
Venus Williams played an exhibition match with Turkey's number one seed, Ipek Senoglu, early Sunday morning on the Bosphorus bridge in Istanbul ahead of the Istanbul WTA Tour tournament 2005. The court spanning Europe and Asia was set up on the bridge making it a truly inter-continental match. The WTA tour will be held on the courts of Crown Plaza May 16-21. The bridge was closed Sunday morning between 7-7.45 for the match between the two tennis stars. |

Cicek: No hurry about ECHR ruling Minister of Justice Cemil Çiçek said that there is “no hurry” about the European Court of Human Rights' (ECHR) ruling on Abdullah Öcalan’s retrial. Talking to a group of journalists in İstanbul’s Bilgi University, Çiçek explained that the ruling is not one-dimensional and that there are many factors involved from politics to law. He also pointed out that there is still work-in-progress regarding the ruling. |

Rice in Iraq for surprise visit Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice made a surprise visit to Iraq, Sunday, following the upsurge in violence that is over-shadowing the newly elected cabinet in the country. Rice plans to hold talks with political leaders in Iraq to discuss the recent upsurge in violence and try to find some solutions on what can be done to quell the recent uprising from the insurgents that has resulted in over 400 people dead within the last two weeks. |

Uzbeks bury the dead following violent protests Two days after the uprising in the Central Asian city of Andizhan, Uzbekistan, family and friends bury the dead, estimated to be at around 500, as sniper fire continues to ring out in the city. The mass hysteria broke out following a protest against President Islam Karimov on the main square in the Uzbekistan city, which is close to the border of Kyrgyzstan. In an unexpected move the military opened fire on the protesters causing wide spread panic across the city on Friday. |

Turkish man detained for human trafficking A Turkish man has been detained by Greek police for human trafficking on the eastern Aegean Greek island of Lesbos. The man who has been identified as 26-year-old Deniz Atisi was arrested Friday and is due to appear before Magistrates on Saturday. The smuggler was in the act of trafficking 13 immigrants at the time of arrest. It is believed that the Turkish people-trafficker was ferrying the illegal immigrants from Turkey to Europe. |
