Moscow brings about surprise step forward for Cyprus peace process

The reception given by Russian President Vladimir Putin in honor of leaders attending ceremonies marking the 60th anniversary of the ending of WWII was the scene of an informal "Cyprus summit" by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, and Greek Cypriot leader Tasos Papadopoulos.

The three men, talking at the reception prior to the dinner, made some unexpected steps forward on the subject of peace for the island of Cyprus.

According to sources, the conversation circled around the fact that the a solution-less situation was no longer tolerable for Cyprus. Annan stressed that a new process must be started to attain a lasting peace on the island, and Erdogan agreed. Papadopoulos also agreed, stating "Yes, we are on the side of peace. We are also on the side of finding a solution." Apparently, Annan and Erdogan also made tentative plans to meet during Erdogan's planned trip to the US in June.

In a press conference held in Ankara following his return from Moscow, Erdogan recalled the meeting at the Kremlin, saying "I see now that Southern Cyprus welcomes the idea of the renewal of a peace process, and that they will approach it positively. Annan and I will meet during my trip to the US to talk things over."
