Reproachful words on genocide decisions

Gul: Erdogan and Kocharian to meet up in Warsaw
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, in order to mark "Europe Day," gave a lunch yesterday in Ankara to which the Ambassadors from EU countries in Turkey were invited. At the lunch, Gul noted that the upcoming European Council summit in Warsaw will witness a meeting between Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Armenian President Robert Kocharian. |

Kemal Dervis gives up MP status prior to settling in at the UNDP
Republican People's Party (CHP) MP for Istanbul Kemal Dervis, who was recently chosen to head up the UN's Development Program (UNDP), officially served his resignation at the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) yesterday. Dervis said that he will make a final speech at tomorrow's general TBMM meeting. "I will bid everyone farewell" said Dervis. |

Iraqi Cabinet sworn in for a second-time The Iraqi cabinet, which is religiously and culturally diverse, went under oath for the second time, Monday, following a demand by Kurdish leaders that a reference to federalism which had been removed from the original text be reinserted. The clause was reinserted following concerns that it may spark a threat to the Kurdish-Shiite alliance. The issue of federalism is important to the Kurds who have enjoyed autonomy in the northern part of Iraq. |

Greek Consul General backs Turkey's EU bid Speaking at a panel on 'Cultural Values between Turkey and the European Union', Greek Consul-General in Istanbul Dr. Alexis Alexandris said that, "Turkey's membership would add a novel touch to the bloc's cultural mosaic." Alexandris went on to talk about how Turkey and Greece are brothers culturally and historically, noting that it was the capitalist movement that had empowered nationalism which was responsible for the Greeks secession. |

Turkey on top of environmental issues
Good news for Turkey's environmental initiative as a report issued by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) states that Turkey is among the first top 10 countries worldwide which have an increase in tree planting practices by 100%. The Ministry of Environment and Forestry has accelerated afforesting activities since 2003 as part of its commitment to the National Forestry Programs (FFP) as set out by the UN. |
