The return of Stalin
The ceremonies celebrating the 60th anniversary of end of WWII today in Moscow have renewed discussions of Stalin's legacy in Russia and around the world. Statues to the former leader are beginning to be seen in more and more Russian provinces. While communists say that fascism was beaten thanks to Stalin, the reformers remind that during the post-war period, tens of millions of Russian citizens died at Stalin's hands.

No meeting for Erdogan and Kocharian in Moscow
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in Moscow today for the ceremonies in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, will first watch a procession through the Red Square, then lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier, and finally attend a reception hosted by Russian premier Putin at the Kremlin. There are no plans for PM Erdogan to meet officially with Armenian President Robert Kocharian, who will also be in Moscow for the ceremonies. |

Schroeder: We apologize for the suffering we inflicted on the Russians
While "Democracy Day" is being celebrated in Berlin, German Prime Minister Gerhard Schroeder has apologized to the Russians for the suffering they experienced during World War II. An article written by Schroeder published in the Russian newspaper Komnosomolskaya Pravda said "We apologize to you for the pain inflicted at the hands of the Germans. |

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at a board meeting of the Turkish Association of Chambers and Stock Exchanges (TOBB), said "If there has been a jump, an increase in our exports, our efforts to bring together the private sector with that country's leaders has played a big role here. Why wan't this happening before? Because outside of Turgut Ozal's administration, no government took the interest we have." |

Parents regret hospital's decision to allow display of dead septuplets' bodies
Reaction to Izmir's Central Hospital's decision to display the seven bodies of babies born dead at 19 weeks to Sibel Deniz are continuing across Turkey. Pictures of the babies, lying in a line on a towel with the hospital's name printed at the top, ran in newspapers yesterday, with particular focus falling on the man pictured behind them, Central Hospital's Doctor Ozer Gurbuz. |

Greek Cypriots eye pre-1974 properties with anger Greek Cypriots are defending their right to bring about warrants for the arrest of Turkish Cypriots residing in or otherwise using property which belonged to Greek owners prior to 1974. Greek MP Hristodulos Taramuntas has said that thousands of Greek Cypriots are in line to open such cases, and that "we don't need to wait for Ankara to become a full EU member in order to try the Turkish Cypriots."

Five thousand Turks march in Brussels
Five thousand Turks living in Belgium traveled from all over the country to participate in an organized demonstration in a Turkish suburb of Brussels on Saturday in response to a protest made by a group of Armenians who had attempted to burn the Turkish flag in front of the Turkish consulate in Brussels on April 24. The demonstrations were peaceful. Turks marched through the streets waving the Turkish flag. |

Ataturk Airport is full
Civil Aviation General Director Topa Bilgettin Toker sent a message to the Turkish State Airport Administration (DHMI) General Directorate, Turkish Airlines (THY), Association of Turkish Private Sector Aviation Administrations (TOSHID) and Sabiha Gokcen Airport Administration, HEAS and HAVAS, stating that there will be no extra flights scheduled out of Ataturk Airport in Istanbul as of June 1, following a report on aircraft and passenger capacity issued by Eurocontrol and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA). |

Shakira arrives in Turkey
World renowned pop singer Shakira arrived in Turkey on Saturday to film a popular German entertainment show on May 15 from the ancient Roman amphitheater of Aspendos near the Mediterranean resort of Antalya. The show 'Wetten, dass?' will be broadcast live from Turkey with the Colombian superstar singing "La Tortura", a song from her new album "Fijacion Oral 1," which is to be released in June. |
