Hot line to be established with Jerusalem
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan left yesterday from Ankara for Israel, accompanied his wife, Emine Erdogan, as well as various ministers from his government. Following PM Erdogan's one and a half hour meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, it would appear that the icy diplomatic relations between Turkey and Israel are beginning to thaw. |

100 thousand people gather in Istanbul for May 1st
The 1st of May was celebrated across the world yesterday. A gathering in Kadikoy, a port-neighborhood on the Asian side of Istanbul, brought together an estimated 100 thousand people. Groups that were present argued not with the police, but largely with each other. An estimated 6,500 police were on duty in Istanbul alone. |

Marmaris Maritime Festival ends
The Marmaris International Maritime Festival came to a close last night in Ataturk Square with concerts bny Sefarad and Ozcan Deniz along with many more guest singers and artists. The celebrations finished in the early hours of this morning. Marmaris Governor Cemalettin Ozdemir expressed his gratitude to all participating countries and hoped that the festival would become a notable event on the Mediterranean in the future. |

Another Turkish truck driver dead in Iraq
Yet another Turkish truck driver has been killed in Iraq. The driver was reportedly killed in northern Baghdad, Sunday. Iraqi officials say that the driver had been killed by bullet wounds that were fired at him in the Mekhul region of Baghdad in the neighborhood of Beyci. The tragedy comes as another blow to Turkish truck drivers working in Iraq, the number of drivers presently stands at more than 90. |

Gul stresses need for reform in the Islamic world
Addressing an audience at the International Islamic World Nongovernmental Organizations Conference in Istanbul, Sunday, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul noted that it was necessary for Islamic countries to step towards reforms and that: "Reform is not about Islam or religion it is about governing Muslim societies"
Gul said that the subject of reform should be approached with confidence, open-mindedness and without anxiety. |

New York Times: Kemal Dervis the right choice
Reverberations resulting from the selection of CHP Istanbul MP and former government minister Kemal Dervis to the position of head of the UN's Development Program (UNDP) continue. The New York Times newspaper, in an article praising Dervis, said his appointment was "the right choice at the UN, and should be celebrated." The Times said further that Dervis would "strengthen" the UN, and that both UN General Secretary Kofi Annan and Dervis should be congratulated. |

Schroeder: Open the monastery on Heybeliada, talk to the Greeks
German Prime Minister Gerard Schroeder arrives in Ankara tomorrow night for his second visit to Turkey following a 15 month gap. Among the messages he is bringing to Ankara from Berlin, Schroeder is expected to underline that there are no deviations in the EU's intentions to getting Turkey on the road to full membership. |

Primary school textbooks to be free next year too
The National Education Ministry has announced that it will continue to ensure that primary school students receive their textbooks at no cost in the coming school year. The Ministry noted that it had already set aside over 250 trillion TL for this purpose. |
