Saddam's brutal regime killed hundreds of children

One hundred and thirteen bodies have been found and identified at the site of a mass grave of 18 trenches in Iraq. The bodies who were carrying identity cards at the time of death are said to be Kurdish women and children, mostly children. The graves were found in Samawa, some 300 km south of Baghdad, and is dead proof of the horrific treatment of minorities under Saddam Hussein's regime.

The bodies, two thirds of which are children, were thought have been killed during the transfer of Kurds under the ANFAL campaigns in 1987-88, when Saddam ordered the round up of Kurds to quell the uprising within the country. Some say they may have been brought from detention centers where they had stayed since being rounded up many years earlier under Saddam.

Investigators collecting evidence say that they believe that the women and children were brought here unarmed and shot at the side of the pits, where their bodies were left to fall directly into the pits.

The grave is believed to hold some 1,500 bodies. There is a suspected 300 graves littered around the country.
