Head of General Army Staff

Head of the Military Staff, General Hilmi Ozkok, in a one and a half hour speech yesterday at the Command Headquarters of Istanbul's Military Academy, referenced the Greater Middle East Project, and the desire of some forces to have Turkey be known as a model of "moderate Islam."

Conservative German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who was elected and called Pope Benedict XVI, said that he was not against Turkey and praised Turks as a “respected nation.”

Incirlik opens to wider logistic use by US forces

An agreement that would open up the Incirlik Airforce base in Adana to use by US forces as a "logistics hub" for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq was submitted yesterday to the Board of Ministers in the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) for signing. When the agreement is made binding, the US is expected to make an official announcement.  
Turkey has the 10th largest army

While coming in 16th in terms of population size in the world, Turkey has the world's 10th largest armed forces. According to a World Bank Development report, Turkey's arms import level in 1995 was 1.2 billion dollars, a figure which retracted to 504 million dollars in 2003.  
Erdogan in Kabul: "We are members of the same civilization"

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, after arriving in Kabul yesterday for a two day visit to Afghanistan, said to Afghanis in a speech "We are members of the same civilization." PM Erdogan also said that Afghanistan's peace, security, and stability were of the utmost importance for Turkey.
   
Letter asks Bush to recognize
Armenian genocide

A letter sent at the request of the Armenian lobby to the White House asking the US President to formally recognize April 24th as "Armenian Genocide Day" carried a noticeable increase in signatures compared to a similar letter sent last year. The letter this year was signed by 32 members of the US Senate and 175 members of the US Congress, including New York Senator Hilary Clinton and Massachussetts Governor John Kerry.  
Another AKP deputy resigns

Another deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) resigned, Wednesday. Agriculture Deputy Cemal Kaya resigned as a parliamentary deputy in order to clear his name of corruption allegations, however he awaiting a parliamentary majority to approve his resignation. 
Barrosso calls on Ankara to sign protocol
as last step to accession talks

Speaking in an interview on CNN Turk, Wednesday, European Union Commission President Jose Manuel Barrosso said that he believed that if Turkey signs the additional protocol, there won't be new criteria for beginning accession talks into the European Union bloc. The protocol has been a subject of discussion in Ankara where it has been accepted but not as yet signed and returned to the EU Commission.
