The Greek media focused much attention on Sunday's presidential elections in Northern Cyprus. Nationalist leaning newspaper Tarros, in a commentary on Denktas' blaming of the Greeks even as he left office, used the headline "He may be aging, but he's still a wolf..." "As cold blooded as a snake"
Former president of The Northern Republic of Cyprus (TRNC), Rauf Denktas, in his last days as leader of the Turkish Cypriots, visited newly elected President Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday to congratulate him. Shaking hands in front of cameras, Denktas had this to say about his former foe Talat: "Leadership requires patience and cold-bloodedness, and Talat is as cold-blooded as a snake. His patience will drive the Greeks mad. I am comfortable passing the mantle on to him." Said Denktas further "He (Talat) knows that I will support him. We will all help him to achieve a lasting peace." |

President Sezer send letter to outgoing and incoming Northern Cypriot leaders
President of the Turkish Republic, Ahmet Nejdet Sezer, has sent separate messages to both the departing and the newly-elected Presidents of the Northern Cypriot Turkish Republic. In a letter to the departing Denktas, part of Sezer's message read as follows: "You will always have a special place in our hearts, and in the history of the Turkish Cypriots, for all of our work and effort in defending our place in Cyprus." |

Lagendijk: If every government behaved like Papadopoulos, the EU would collapse
Joost Lagendijk, co-head of joint EU-Turkey Parliament Commission, has commented on Sunday's elections in the Northern Cypriot Turkish Republic, saying this: "If every government in Europe were to behave like (Greek Cypriot leader) Papadopoulos, the EU would collapse. Because you can't get anywhere without solutions. No one can get what they want all the time. |

Some Literary Observations by the Minister of Culture Yesterday, at the opening of a branch of the "Pyramid Bookstore" chain in Ankara, Minister of Culture and Tourism Atilla Koc made some interesting observations about literary life in Turkey. Commenting at the opening that the reading level in Turkey would rise with the increase in bookstores, Koc then went on to say that, in his opinion, novels flowed out of developed countries, while poetry was the domain of the less-developed countries. Following on this, Koc said that he was pleased with the growing number of novels written by Turkish authors in the past years. |

Kofi Annan congratulates Talat on win
United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan issued a statement, Monday, congratulating Mehmet Ali Talat on his victorious win in the presidential elections that were held on the divided island of the Northern Republic of Cyprus (TRNC), Sunday. "He congratulates Mehmet Ali Talat and looks forward to working productively with him in the continuing search for peace on the island," said a spokesman for Annan. |

The Turkish parliament is celebrating it's 85th anniversary this week with a variety of events that will be held throughout the week and will be topped of by a formal gathering on Saturday, April 23. |

Greek officials apologize for flag desecration
An investigation into the desecration of the Turkish flag during a visit by Turkish officials to the Greek war College, last week, will get underway vowed Greek military officials. The incident occurred when two officers and five students were staying at the Greek War College last week. The Turkish contingency was sent to the Greek War College last Monday, in an effort to bolster ties and build confidence by Ankara and Athens. |
