Turkish Parliament 85 years old

The celebration of 85 years of the Turkish Parliament got underway, Monday, with Parliamentary speaker Bulent Arinc lighting the National Sovereignty Torch in Ankara. The Turkish parliament is celebrating it's 85th anniversary this week with a variety of events that will be held throughout the week and will be topped of by a formal gathering on Saturday, April 23.

A wreath will be placed at the Ataturk monument by deputies before they attend a ceremony at Ataturk's mausoleum, Anitkabir. An evening reception will be held at Parliament, Saturday.

The anniversary comes at a time when the Turkish Parliament is extremely busy, with the General Assembly on Tuesday debating an investigation proposal submitted by the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) against State Minister Guldal Aksit and Agriculture Minister Sami Guclu.

Other hot topics under discussion this week are: the bill that allows the use renewable energy resources for electricity production, and a bill that was vetoed by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer that called for the employment of 10,000 additional police officers.
