Order to Destroy Orhan Pamuk Books Overturned by Governor

An order by Mustafa Altinpinar, Provincial Governor of the Sutculer district of Isparta, to destroy all books by renowned author Orhan Pamuk, was officially vetoed yesterday by Isparta Governor Isa Parlak.

Altinpinar's February 15th order was based on reaction to an interview given by Pamuk to a foreign publication, in which Pamuk asserted that it was time for Turkey to accept responsibility for the accusions of genocide against the Armenians.

Following Provincial Governor Altinpinar's order, it was discovered that none of the libraries in the Sutculer district contained books written by Pamuk. According to Isparta Governor Parlak, "(Provincial Governor) Altinpinar used his authoriry incorrectly. This was clearly an inappropriate order. The order has been vetoed." When reached for comment on the matter, Altinpinar said "There is nothing to talk about. I do not wish to say anything on this subject."
