Almost 400 Dead in Iran Quake

An earthquake registering 6.4 on the Richter scale hit a province in southeast Iran early Tuesday morning, destroying villages and killing almost 400 people. The centre of the quake, which hit at 5;55 a.m.(local time), was in the town of Zarand, 440 miles southeast of the capital. 

Prime Minister Erdoğan and Foreign Minister Gül departed yesterday for Brussels to attend a NATO summit today. They will be discussing the alliance's role in Afghanistan, Iraq, transatlantic relations and the Middle East peace process. Turkey may face pressure to increase its contributions to NATO’s training mission in Iraq.

Turkish Cypriots Want Peace

CYPRUS - Turkish Cypriots turned out to vote en masse at the parliamentary elections Sunday, demonstrating strong will and determination to create a new much wanted peace on the divided island. The turn out was reported to be at 74 percent. A strong indicator that island residents are happy and willing to participate in the democratic process of reunifying the island. 
Feith warns against anti-Americanism in Turkey
A discussion on anti-Americanism sparked by a Robert Pollock article in The Wall Street Journal last week dominated the headlines in the Turkish press. Dailies also featured the political failure to effectively oppose to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). 
Ankara Plan Media Auction
The Turkish government plans to sell of its media companies, which were gained back in the banking crisis four years ago. The auction is expected to go ahead in March and include some of the biggest: television and radio stations, newspapers and magazines. 
Injured striker Nihat out for rest of season

Real Sociedad's Turkish international striker Nihat Kahveci will miss the rest of the season after tearing the cruciate ligament in his left knee, the Primera Liga club said on Sunday. The 25-year-old, who will have surgery, will be out for around six months and will be unavailable for Turkey's World Cup qualifiers against Albania, Georgia, Greece and Kazakhstan.
