Corruption Charges in Energy Sector Deepen
Charges of corruption in Turkey's energy sector deepened yesterday when businessman Ibrahim Selcuk, detained in the operation to investigate the Ministry of Energy, was found to have connections with Mafia leader Alaattin Cakici and Intelligence (MIT) official Kasif Kozanoglu. Selcuk, the owner of Ezgi Insatt (construction) company, was apparently using these connections to bribe and scare people to get what he wanted within the energy sector. So far 18 people have been detained under the operation. |

Sertab's Tsunami Aid Efforts Appreciated by Erdogan
On his tour is Southern Asia, Prime Minister Erdogan presented a boquet of flowers to Turkey’s Eurovision-winning singer Sertap Erener who joined the aid campaign in Sri Lanka. Erener told the Prime Minister that she came to Sri Lanka to raise money for medicine desperately needed in the region. In a gesture of appreciation for the stars good will and noble efforts the Premier presented her with flowers given to him. |

Student Amnesty The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) launched a motion to pardon undergraduate and graduate students who have been expelled from university since 2000. The Republican People’s Party (CHP) finds the move a populist one saying that there were 270,000 students expelled from university because of the headscarf. |

Investors Fleeing Russia to Turkey The Eastern Europe Fund (EEF), which already makes one fifth of its investments in Turkish shares, was reported by the Financial Times (FT) as putting further investments in Turkey. The FT reported that the Eastern Europe Fund (EEF) worth 100 million Sterling started curbing it's investments in Russia and increasing it's investments in Turkey. Turkey already holds an investment worth 20 percent of the EEF. |
