Stress with EU

One week ahead of the EU summit, Foreign Minister Gul and Dutch Minister in charge of European Affairsb Atzo Nikolai had a stressful talk. Gul reacted at the visiting Minister over the second draft prepared by Netherlands for the summit.

About the second draft submitted to him by Nikolai, Gul said that “Qe told you our views on the first draft. But I see that you have not considered our views at all. Nothing asked for Turkey has been inserted to this text. You can not act in a manner satisfying only one side!”

Gul told Nikolai that “We conveyed to EU our requests, under 8 headings. But this text includes none of them.”

Gul said “Our reactions to the first text were clear. The reactions of all member countries have been reflected on this text. We see this clearly. But we can not see our requests.”

Gul said “You seem to have overlooked the wishes of Turkey totally , pretending that you have only listened. How can this be done? Term Chairman Netherlands should consider some things. Turkey is the addressee of the issue but its wishes are not in question. You have to try to satisfy all relevant parties.”

Nikolai said he noted the message of Gul and “It was a useful talk.”

After seeing that none of Turkey’s wishes were taken into consideration in the second draft, Gul cancelled a scheduled press conference with Nikolai.

EU SUMMIT IN CANKAYA

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer chaired a summit in the Cankaya Kiosk on Tuesday, about EU. Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogar, Chief of Staff General Hilmi Ozkok, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ali Tuygan, his deputies and bureaucrats were present in the summit.

A statement after the summit said that “Turkey has fulfilled all the criteria of Copenhagen. The October 6 report of the European Commission has confirmed this fact. The Turkish nation rightfully expects from EU to decide to ebgin talks with Turkey without delay in 2005 without any conditions and for full membership. As much as this decision, the sustainability of the membership process of Turkey , has big importance. “

The drafts prepared for December 17 by Netherlands were taken up in the meeting. The attendants underlined once more that Turkey in no way would accept an open-ended negotiating process, a referendum to be held by the member countries on Turkey’s membership, the condition for recognizing Southern Cyprus and the implication made to the Aegean problems.
