Straw We May Start Immediately

Coming to Ankara for a working visit, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw gave the good news that the negotiations could be launched at the first half of 2005. Straw gave the following message to Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul with whom he met yesterday at breakfast: people of Luxembourg told us that they wished to launch the negotiations with Turkey during their own term presidency.

He said that they were giving an express support to the immediate launching of negotiations, that if this were not realized at the term presidency of Luxembourg, the U.K. would speed up the launching of negotiations with Turkey as the U.K. would take the term presidency on July 1.

At the press conference, Straw said that he came to Ankara on a wonderful day, that it was once more confirmed that the support given to Turkey as the U.K. was right and that he felt himself privileged due to this fact.

Meeting in a very cordial manner with Gul, Straw stressed that when the negotiations started, everyone would get used to the idea of Turkey’s membership and would say, “Why did not we admit Turkey before?”
