French President Jacques Chirac said that he supported the proposal to held a referendum in France in respect of EU membership of Turkey, however that this was not possible before the completion of negotiations.

In France, the discussions about French Economy and Finance Minister Nicholas Sarkozy's call to hold a referendum about Turkey's membership are speedily under way.
Answering the questions of reporters at the Presidency spokesman Catherine Colonna's farewell ceremony, Chirac said, "Of course I support the referendum about Turkey, but only after 15 years."
