In the last months, France introduced a ban for turban with a campaign led by President Chirac. With the opinion that turban was a symbol threatening the secularism. Following the ban in France, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected the action filed by a girl studying at the university in Turkey, with the same reason. Thus, turban is a political symbol to the ECHR as well!.. Before this action, again ECHR rejected the application of banned Refah Party as it deemed the propaganda made for encouraging turban as a ground for breaching secularism.
Both the ban introduced by France and these two judgements of ECHR stirred up our Islamic people. In Turkey, for almost 10 years, the campaigns of freedom for turban are increasing. The Islamic wing seeks to have turban among the fundamental rights and freedoms. With AKP's coming to power, the participation of Emine Erdogan, PM Erdogan's wife, and some minister wives with turban to the official protocol blazed these discussions more. However, no one in Turkey changes its position.
The discussion moves to the legal field. The rule that turban cannot be worn at the public sphere is introduced. This time, the discussion that what public area is, where it begins and ends, is opened.
