The Greek Cypriot Administration harshly opposed to the reference to Christianity in the Constitution of the European Union (EU) on grounds of the entity of Turks in the island. In this way the Greek Cypriots remained apart from Greece which supports Christianity.

The seven EU countries, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Portuguese and Czech Republic adopted a joint stance on emphasizing Christianity in the Constitution. Greece reportedly gave support to this group. However, Greek Cyprus said that it would not support such an initiative which would hurt Turks.
