Denktas: We saved the Republic; No Need to Resign

Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas, who was expected to resign in case a Yes vote was cast by the people of Northern Cyprus, held a press conference after the first results yesterday and said, 'There is no reason for me to resign.'

Stressing that the existence of TRNC was maintained as a result of the rejection of the Annan Plan at the Greek Cypriot section, Denktas said, 'We saved the Republic. Our campaign for No is fulfilled. I will not resign.'

Calling on the West to keep its promise to TRNC to lift the embargoes imposed on his state in case of a No vote by Greek Cypriots, Denktas also called on his people, who were split into two over the Annan Plan, to reunify at the new term.
