Council of Europe will not Monitor Turkey Any More

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe adopted the report which recommended lifting the monitoring process on Turkey. The report had said that there was no need to monitor Turkey which has made the necessary reforms.

Turkey was under monitoring since the September 12 1980 military coup. The report in question is the most positive political document ever prepared by EU on Turkey.

The report said that Turkey had the will and capacity to realize reforms to harmonize with the European standards and has entered an irreversible path.

Removal of the death sentence, the re-trials upon ECHR rulings and the changes in the status of the National Security Board were the important developments underlined in the report.

The report also called on Ankara to get rid of the September 12 constitution and to prepare a new constitution at European standards.
