Objections Of Denktas

After meeting Greek C. Leader Papadopulous and U.N. Envoy Alvaro de Soto, Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas said that the demands of their side included , strengthened bi-zonality, compensation of the losses of Turks between 1963-74, preventing thne EU acquisition from removing the special rights of Turks; the guarantorship of Turkey and the situation of settlers who came from Turkey.

Meanwhile Greek C.Leader Tasos Papadopulous claimed that the majority of Turkish C. Demands were outside the scope of the Annan Plan.

Denktas said that they wanted the equality of two ethnic peoples, instead of two founder states in the joint Senate.

Greek Cypriots Are Over Relaxed!”
Denktas said, “Greek Cypriots are very relaxed as they already are members of EU and want the issue of bi-zonality settled under freedom of circulation , under EU norms.

"We also demanded compensation for our removal from our homes between 1963 and 1974....We want the founder state to be like the one in 1960, in equal powers. The main thing is to have two equal founder and sovereign peoples and a central government based on these, which was described in the series of ideas." (of former SG Ghali).

"Even Mr.Verheugen does not know the method to insert our agreement and derogations into the primary law but promised to consider it. Otherwise, an agreement to comply with EU legislation, could easily be pierced by law suits opened at EU courts.

"We need a large transition period to reach the economic level of Greek Cypriots; otherwise we shall be economically weak and melt.

"The thing we heard from Greek Cypriots were not a surprise as the Greek Cypriot media already mentioned these. Another issue is the settlers and they oppose these people to vote (in the referendum). We have no such definition, but have the term citizen. Whoever votes in the elections will vote here too.

"I will inform you all the time. They want a blackout. But why? I remained silent in the past and the blame was put on me! The blackout intends to silence me!"

Meanwhile Greek Cypriot leader Papadopulous claimed that the changes which the Turkish side demanded were not contained in the Annan Plan and he will defend the “irrevocable objectives of the Cyprus Hellenism” in the talks.
