Denktas: Preparation is necessary for negotiations

Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas said that the invitation made by U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to begin negotiations on February 10 in New York, necessitated preparations. Speaking with a group of journalists in Sheraton Hotel in Ankara, Denktas said "If this is an invitation to talk, it is technically possible. But if they want us to begin negotiations on February 10, then, preparation is necessary."

Upon news that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan extended an invitation to all parties to begin talks in New York, Denktas said, "I have not received any invitation yet."

When reminded that Annan was quoted as saying that he will contact him, Denktas said "A big operation was launched to get rid of me. They first waited for my removal. But when this did not happen, they felt the need to contact me. However, you can not be touchy, in diplomacy."

On news that U.S. planned to deploy troops in TRNC, Denktas said that to do that, U.S. first should contacts authorities of TRNC and recognize TRNC's existence.

"We do not need foreign troops. The Turkish soldiers have already eliminated our concerns. Our concern is attacks by Greek Cypriots. Will American soldiers die for us?"
