Optimistic messages from Powell
Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell had a meeting of almost 50 minutes in Washington, discussing all issues ranging from Iraq, to Middle East and Cyprus.

In his meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan asked from U.S. to take action to commence the solution process in Cyprus. Upon this request, Bush instructed State Secretary Colin Powell to take action. The most important item on the agenda of Bush-Erdogan meeting was the Cyprus issue.

The First Parliamentary Immunities Commission postponed tackling 19 immunity files to the end of the legislative term. Therefore, the files of 10 deputies including, Interior Minister Abdulkadir Aksu, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, and True Path Party (DYP) Chairman Mehmet Agar, will be handled at the end of the legislative term.  
Turks On The List
Iraqi Al Mada daily argued that the Saddam administration distributed oil to some states, statesmen, firms, and people for free for them to object to the war of U.S. against Iraq. Those, who are on the list of 270, denied the claims. 
“Return-To-Kurus” Law
The law on removing the last six zeros of Turkish Lira was adopted in Parliament on Wednesday. The “New Turkish Lira” will be used as from January 1, 2005. Therefore 1 million TL will be equal to 1 New TL and “Kurus,” that is one percent of TL, which was used in the past, will be used again.  
Surprise Visit Of Basbug To Israel
Second Chief of Joint Staff Ilker Basbug reportedly paid a surprising visit to Israel on Tuesday. It is striking that this visit of Basbug took place in a climate, in which there is news that Turkey may act as a mediator between Syria and Israel.  
Cyprus Report Adopted
The Council of Europe stated that EU should commence accession talks with Turkey once the latter fulfilled the Copenhagen Criteria. European parliamentarians called on EU to give an open message to Turkey in this respect. According to them, the Cyprus issue should not be connected to the EU membership of Turkey.  
Heroin Mountain
Istanbul police captured 1004 kilograms of heroin in Buyukcekmece, Istanbul on Wednesday. Officials announced that it was the highest amount of heroin captured in just one operation in Europe.
