Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell had a meeting of almost 50 minutes in Washington, discussing all issues ranging from Iraq, to Middle East and Cyprus.
In a joint press conference with Gul, Powell said that a window of opportunity was opened in Cyprus and he was personally willing to work with the U.N. Secretary General and the parties involved. However Powell said that he was not to mediate in negotiations. Powell praised the plan of Annan for Cyprus as a good one , saying that U.S. regarded this plan as the basis of negotiations in Cyprus.
On Turkey's concerns over Northern Iraq, Powell said that U.S. and Turkey shared the view that Iraq must remain intact , and its sources should be shared by all Iraqis. Powell said that even though Kurds enjoyed some degree of autonomy, they were still part of whole Iraq.
Powell said that U.S. shared Turkey's concerns over PKK-KADEK.
