190 Turban Cases In ECHR

According to the “balance sheet” of the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR), Turkey was found guilty in 76 cases in 2003. 56 out of these 76 cases were brought on grounds of “lack of fair trial.” There are 190 appeals about turban to ECHR against Turkey at the moment and one of them belongs to Hayrunisa Gul, the wife of Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.

The number of appeals to ECHR against Turkey declined from 3 thousand 887 in 2002 to 2 thousand 616 in 2003. This made Turkey the fifth-ranking country in the list of countries, against which the court received the highest number of appeals. There were 5 thousand 338 appeals against Russia, 5 thousand 136 appeals against Poland, 3 thousand 635 cases against Romania, and 2 thousand 828 appeals against France. On the other hand, Turkey is the third country, against which there are highest number of cases pending in ECHR. There are 7 thousand 850 appeals to the court against Turkey at the time.
